A warm sun, clear skies, and 3 - 5 ft. waves emerged at the 2008 Honda US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California on Monday, day four of the ten day event. After three days of qualifying trials, eight surfers out of 96 advanced to today’s opening round of 192, the first round of the men’s 2008 US Open of Surfing ASP 6-star World Qualifying Series competition. The morning began with clean waist to chest high waves, but the wind caused the conditions to deteriorate rapidly in the afternoon. This day belonged to Brazilian, Charlie Brown; yes, his name really is Charlie Brown. This was his first appearance in the United States and he thrilled surfing fans with the day’s highest two wave heat score: 16.67 out of 20. Snoopy and Charles Schultz would have been very proud of him.
Three days of qualifying trials ended Sunday with Pablo Gutierrez (ESP), Granger Larsen (Lahaina, HI), Nick Rozsa (Oxnard, CA), Macy Mullen (Milileni,HI), Alejo Muniz (Florianopolis, BRA), Kyle Ramey (Poipu Beach, HI), Dane Ward (San Clemente, CA) and Tyler Stanaland (Laguna Beach, CA) advancing into the round of 192 in the main event of the men’s 2008 Honda US Open of Surfing. Yesterday, the boy’s 2008 O’Neill U.S. Open Pro Junior determined its finalist for the finals next weekend. Advancing to the championship round are: Julian Wilson (Coolum, AUS), Chris Salisbury (Newport, AUS), Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), and Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA). In the ASP Grade-2 S3 Supergirl Pro Junior, Sage Erickson (Ventura, CA), Coco Ho (North Shore, HI), Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana, CA), and Nikita Robb (East London, ZAF) advanced to next weekend’s final. In the long board competition, Noah Shimabukuro (Oceanside, CA), Ned Snow (North Shore, HI), Tony Silvagni (Kerry Beach, NC), and Taylor Jensen (San Clemente, CA) all advanced to next weekend’s Honda U.S. Open of Longboarding finals.
In men’s competition in the round of 192 on Monday, Shane Beschen (San Clemente, CA), a former US Open champion, also advanced with one of the day’s top heat scores: 16.0 out of 20. His next heat tomorrow promises to be one of the best of the day when he goes against Mike Losness (San Clemente, CA), Cory Lopez (Dana Point, CA), and Kyle Knox (San Diego, CA). Other notable surfers advancing out of today’s round of 192 include Huntington Beach locals Micah Byrne, Brad Ettinger, Quinn McCrystal, and Michael Hoisington.
